A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life without fear.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people yelling “six seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The trend became so widespread that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to open the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Every time, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
