The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, making good on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to communities across the country,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be ended before then.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

Legal and Operational Constraints

Impact on Workers

These terminations took place on the same day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but not the start of October, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate stated. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
