Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a series of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became public.
The economist stated in an announcement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and look forward tracking their development".
Summers, who previously led Harvard University, announced on recently that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released emails demonstrated that the official corresponded with the financier until the day before his 2019 arrest for accused trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted his determination to resign.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the insight he brought to the Board," OpenAI stated.
Political Context
This news comes after the entire Congress of the legislative branch voted on Tuesday to pass a measure that would require the Department of Justice to disclose its records on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will then head to the administration of President Trump for signature. Trump has indicated he expects to sign the legislation, after reversing his stance on the subject following pressure from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-connected emails made public by the House Oversight Committee last week included several prominent individuals in the financier's previous network, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.
The communications indicated that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often seeking to link the official to influential international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the messages were released with the public, the former official stated he accepted "full responsibility for my misguided choice to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he hoped "to restore trust and fix bonds with the individuals closest to me".
Professional History
The professor occupied leadership roles under Democratic administrations; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.
He headed Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and is still a professor there. When announcing his withdrawal from public duties previously on Monday, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a liberal policy institute in DC where Summers was a prominent member, announced that Summers was ceased to be connected with the organization.
He joined the directorate of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in last year - following a defeated move to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
