Ghostface Original Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Franchise with Scream 7.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This latest installment signals the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a character you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Characters
It has been established that a trio of different characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, despite meeting their demise in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their resurrection remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a small cameo is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he got the news from the original writer.
"I remember the phone call. I remember the small talk. I remember him asking. That moment is permanently etched on my mind," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the years since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, for better or worse," he explains. "A character that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling significant anxiety about not wanting to be the one who damages the popular series.
"It's either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While countless dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back persists. Maybe they live rent-free in Sidney's mind, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, perhaps they are somehow all alive in a strange shared scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror story, inspired by earlier horror movies, also is on the table.
Moviegoers will discover the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
