History of Executing Competitors

The statement noted that the athlete's circumstances was not unique and emphasized Iran’s record of sentencing to death competitors for their convictions, including Habib Khabiri, skipper of the national football team, and a women's sports leader, skipper of the women's volleyball squad. In 2020, a wrestling champion, a 27-year-old national wrestling champion, was put to death.

Additional endorsers to the appeal include Tracy Edwards, who skippered the first women's squad in a round-the-world competition and was the first woman to earn a renowned yachting trophy; the ex- leader of the national squad Craig Foster; and a footballer, who was in the country's selection for the international competition.

Detention and Flawed Legal Process

The athlete was taken into custody in March 2020. The charges against him comprised “causing deterioration on Earth through incendiarism and destruction of government belongings”. His ruling has been annulled multiple times but on 4 October it was confirmed on the third occasion. His legal proceedings was denounced as “deeply biased” by human rights activists and bodies.

Call to UN

The urging to prevent the athlete's death sentence follows a 2023 appeal to the United Nations official for rights, signed by more than one hundred advocates and entities, urging intervention to avert the athlete’s capital punishment.

Capital Punishment Escalation

According to findings, there is an “death penalty surge in the nation, which has attained shocking dimensions”. In 2023, authorities executed at least over 850 people – a nearly half surge on 2022.
