President Endorses Bill to Release Additional Epstein Files After Period of Pushback

The US leader declared on Wednesday evening that he had signed the measure decisively passed by Congress members that directs the Department of Justice to disclose more documents concerning the convicted sex offender, the late pedophile.

The move comes after months of resistance from the leader and his backers in the House and Senate that divided his Maga base and generated conflicts with certain loyal followers.

The president had resisted disclosing the Epstein documents, calling the matter a "hoax" and railing against those who wanted to make the records accessible, notwithstanding promising their release on the election circuit.

Nevertheless he changed direction in the past few days after it became apparent the House would pass the legislation. Donald Trump said: "Everything is transparent".

The specifics remain uncertain what the justice department will make public in response to the legislation – the legislation outlines a range of potential items that should be made public, but allows exclusions for some materials.

Donald Trump Signs Legislation to Force Disclosure of More Jeffrey Epstein Files

The legislation mandates the attorney general to make non-classified related files accessible to the public "in a searchable and downloadable format", covering every inquiry into Epstein, his associate Maxwell, aircraft records and movement logs, individuals referenced or named in relation to his illegal activities, institutions that were tied to his trafficking or financial networks, exemption arrangements and further court deals, internal communications about legal actions, records of his detention and demise, and details about potential document destruction.

The department will have 30 days to turn over the documents. The legislation contains certain exemptions, encompassing deletions of personal details of victims or individual documents, any representations of child sexual abuse, releases that would compromise ongoing inquiries or prosecutions and representations of demise or abuse.
