The Golden State is Fully Drought-Free for the First Time in 25 Years.
For the first time in 25 years, not a single part of California is experiencing dryness. This landmark event arrives after grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that intensified blaze threats and challenged its enormous farming industry.
An Update Shows Zero Abnormally Dry Areas
Thursday's report from the national drought tracker confirmed that the entire state is free from any level of drought. This development resulted from weeks of significant storms that helped fill major reservoirs like Oroville and Shasta exceeding their historic averages.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve always lived in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” stated a weather expert.
From Intense Storms to Soggy Celebrations
The path to this point involved intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in the not-too-distant past, causing widespread flooding, electrical failures, and fatalities. Although that weather began to alleviate the drought, they did not eliminate it.
Until late December, pockets like northeastern California were considered abnormally dry. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 washed away those remaining dry spots.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Remains a Concern
However, authorities caution that being out of drought is not the same as being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the mountain snow accumulation indicate it is only about 70% of the typical level.
This mountain snow, which supplies a significant portion of the state's water as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for the year ahead. Hydrology managers stress that it is too early to make predictions for the months ahead.
“What we are observing right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a California water official. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by April 1st so that we’re closer to average.”
Although the monitor indicates no dryness, the focus now shifts to maintaining this hard-won hydrological health throughout the coming seasons.
