The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
