Following high-level talks, Ukraine's leader Zelenskyy has revealed that the United States has outlined a proposed peace plan featuring security guarantees for Ukraine lasting for a period of fifteen years.

Details of the Proposal

Zelenskyy noted that in the course of a high-stakes meeting with US President President Trump, he had sought long-term defense assurances for up to half a century. Nonetheless, the proposed framework calls for a reduced assurance of fifteen years from America.

The specifics remain undefined what these guarantees would assume, but the president has been insisting on "defense pledges similar to NATO's Article 5, modeled on Nato’s core tenet that aggression towards any member is treated as an act of war against every member.

Diplomatic Advancements

Zelenskyy has said, Washington's protection assurances for his country under the revised 20-point proposal have been completely settled, whereas the US President offered a more guarded assessment, suggesting the progress was more like 95%.

The two presidents affirmed that headway was accomplished during the meeting at the US president's residence. The US President, nevertheless, warned that there were "one or two tough" outstanding issues, including over territory.

Conditions for Russian Talks

On another front, the Ukrainian President also told reporters that a meeting with Russia would be feasible once the Washington and its European partners endorsed a settlement proposal from Ukraine to end the war.

This statement comes following Donald Trump told the media that he thought a three-way discussion between Moscow, Kyiv, and Washington could happen when conditions are suitable.

Background of Engagements

Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin have not held direct talks since the end of 2019. That previous engagement, mediated by the leaders of France and Germany, was intended to renew efforts to end the ongoing conflict.

More recently, in May 2025, the Kremlin leader refused to travel to Istanbul for a proposed meeting with Zelenskyy, turning down a bold proposal to engage in peace talks in Turkey.

Key Sticking Points

One major point of contention is the status of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. President Trump stated that a suggestion to turn the area, which Russia largely controls, into a DMZ continues to be a topic of debate.

Trump further commented that it will be known in the coming weeks whether the hostilities can cease.

The leaders have stressed that the extended negotiations would carry on as they aim to achieve a durable settlement to the nearly four-year hostilities.
