The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us verify the video.

Our team is verifying images and video posted this morning that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.

Our starting point to verify the site of where the images were from relied on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.

Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
